STOKES CEMETERY, GREENSBORO, HALE CO., ALABAMA
Willis B. Stokes STATE OF ALABAMA
Deed to Volney Boardman ET AL GREENE COUNTY
Known all men by these presents that I, Willis B. Stokes of the County of Greene and State of Alabama of the first part and Volney Boardman, Charles Wheelan, Robert B. Waller, James A. Hudson, William Armstead, Robert D. Huckabee, Gray Huckabee, William T. Hudson, William M. Murphy, Daniel P. Bester, C. J. D. Pryor, John Locke, Squire Lowry, David McCrary, and George F. Huckabee of the second part witnesseth that the said Willis B. Stokes, for and in consideration of the sum of Seventy Five dollars to him in hand paid, at or before the signing and the sealing of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened, reproofed, released and confirmed, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, alien, reproof, release and confirm unto the parties of the second part, and the survivors of them, and the heirs, executors and administrators of them and each of them, a certain lot or parcel of ground embracing a portion of the old graveyard near the town of Greensborough in said County: Beginning at an oak mark fore and aft on the section line between Section Eight and Section Seventeen, on the South line of Section Eight in Township Twenty of Range Five East a distant about eight chains and sixty one links from the South West corner of the South East quarter of Section Eight, running thence North two chains and Seventeen links to a stake, Thence West six chains, and eleven links to the place of beginning, containing one acre and thirty two and a half hundredths of an acre, be the same more or less. Said lines being all run with a compass narration of six and half degrees. Together with a road twenty feet wide running East from the Southern boundary of the graveyard varying a little South of a direct line and where it now is, to the public road that leads from Greensborough to Tuscaloosa: And, the said Willis B. Stokes before signing this conveyance makes the following reservations: That all persons who have purchased or for any ground of parcel of ground either for single graves or for family burying grounds, now designated whose names have not been mentioned in the deed of conveyance are to retain the right and title and use of the same, with the same privileges of the road or passage to the public road as if their names had been mentioned in this conveyance.
And also the said Willis B. Stokes reserves the family grave yard or burial ground of his Father's Family, John Stokes, Sen., and also the graveyard or burying ground of said Willis B. Stokes wife Judediah, which burying grounds are in the old graveyard and they are respectfully to enjoy and retain the right and title and use of the same with the road privileges as the persons named in this conveyance: And the said Willis B. Stokes also further reserves in this deed of conveyance fifty eight feet off of the whole extent of the East end of the lot or parcel of ground described above, and hereby designates and sets it off for the sole use of the persons, their heirs and assigns to whom it has been sold &endash; viz-One lot or parcel of ground for family graveyard sold to Dr. Gaston Drake and Thomas M. Johnston jointly several years ago. Also, one other lot or parcel of ground for a family graveyard sold to Colonel Elisha Young, several years ago. Also one other lot or parcel of ground sold and deeded to Thomas M. Johnston this day and before these presents and signed and sealed, containing with the addition of Drake and Johnston and Col. Young, All of the Eastern of the lot or parcel of ground heretofore described as the public graveyard, and running West from the Eastern boundary line the whole length and breadth of said lot fifty eight feet. And, said Willis B. Stokes hereby conveys to the said Dr. Gaston Drake, Thomas M. Johnston and Co., Elisha Young their heirs and all the same rights and privileges of the graveyard and the road or pasway, privileges to the public road as he has to the persons and parties named in the second part to this conveyance.
Together with all and singular the rights and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to the use and behoof of the parties of the second part, their heirs and assigns forever, And the said Willis B. Stokes doth hereby covenant with said parties of the second part and each of them named in this deed and those not named who have purchased and paid for family graveyards or single graves, and the survivors of them and the heirs of them and each of them their and each of their heirs, executors and administrators to open and keep open the road above described forever-and to have free ingress and egress to the said lot or parcel of ground or graveyard over said road whenever they or either of them may think proper.
And the said Willis B. Stokes doth hereby bind himself, his heirs, executors, administrators, to warrant and defend the right and title of the above described lot or parcel of ground unto the parties of the second part named in this deed of conveyance and also to those not named who have purchased and paid for their respective family graveyards reserved in this deed and to each of them of the party of the second part in and to said lot or parcel of ground against himself and all persons claiming under or through him and the claim or claims of any and all persons whatsoever.
On witness whereof, the said Willis B. Stokes of the first part hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal this the 24th day of January, AD, Eighteen Hundred and Fifty-Four.

Greene County certify that Willis B. Stokes whose name is signed to the forgoing conveyance and who is known to me acknowledged before me on this day that being informed of the contents of the conveyance, he executed the same voluntarily on the day the same bears nature. Given under my hand this January 24th, 1854.
